Weekly Tips for May 31/June 1

Posted on 30. May, 2011 by in Uncategorized

Summer is a-l-m-o-s-t here! What are your plans? Staycations, visiting family, beach, lakes, camping? Working on the Annual Fun for Kids report, however RockIt Muffin and RockIt Bubba have decided to not to do camps this summer, so research is limited. Hopefully, it will spur ideas in your local community.

Hope all enjoyed their holiday weekend and took a moment to THANK and REMEMBER those in the our armed forces.

NICE:

Is there someone you needs a little lift? Someone facing a medical adversity, personal issue or just need a lift? Send them a personal letter of how you are there for support or just drop by a hand picked boquet of flowers to brighten their day.  This little gesture will be HUGE to them.

GREEN:

Shopping for sunscreen? The Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) newly released 2011 sunscreen guide can help you make smart decisions. To score high marks in the rankings, a product must be effective — adequately protect skin from both UVA (which causes premature aging, skin cancer, and other skin damage) and UVB (which causes sunburn) rays. It must also be safe, meaning free of potentially harmful chemicals.  Click here for the list of unsafe sunscreens and approved ones

(Editorial: Just bought Neutrogena Wet Skin and Ultra Sheer, back to the drawing board.  A long time favorite, but hard to find is KINeSYS.)

HEALTH:

The Secret for Being Fit for Life is Muscle Memory.

When you teach your body how to do something—ride a bike, surf, strike some yoga poses, run a few miles—it creates a physiological blueprint. So even if you take some time off, you’ll get back to where you were faster than it took you to learn the exercise in the first place. “Muscle memory stems from your body’s learning not just how to perform a task, but also how to break down muscle tissue and then repair and rebuild it,” explains William Kraemer, Ph.D., a professor in the department of kinesiology at the University of Connecticut at Storrs. “That physiological knowledge lets you come back from injury, surgery, and even pregnancy faster, easier, and often better than before,” he says.

So go ahead and take a few days off, your body will remember how fantastic you are when you get back to your workouts.  Speaking of which, this week’s exercises are: Muscle Memory Moves.

FOOD:

You know it is summertime, when dinner is pasta salad and cooking requires light and fun dinner dishes. Here is a yummy and low calorie pasta salad: Chicken Pasta Salad.
