Exercises to Sleep Better, Week of March 18, 2010

Exercise to Combat Sleeplessness

Those who lead more sedentary lives are likely to be poor sleepers. The lack of physical activity can contribute to lack of sound sleep by inhibiting the daily rise and fall of the body-temperature rhythm.  As a result, many people get caught in a cycle of insomnia, reduced energy and physical activity, and worsened insomnia.

Exercise improves sleep by producing a significant rise in body temperature, followed by a compensatory drop a few hours later. The drop in body temperature, which persists for two to four hours after exercise, makes it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep. So plan to exercise at least 6-7 hours before your bedtime. (more…)

Exercise Tip of the Week

Posted on 15. Feb, 2010 in Exercises

Exercise tip – Get your Groove On!  Listen to music and you will enjoy your time much more, get more intense cardio done and be motivated to continue your session and another and another.

Choose music the same speed as your heart beat. For cardio exercise or sports look for music that’s between 120 and 140 beats per minute. You want music that’s about as fast as your heart beat while you’re exercising. During the refrain, put your hands above your head for an extra 30% burn. For yoga, use a beat closer to your resting heart beat.

Use music with a continuous beat. Irregular tempos can break your rhythm and reduce effectiveness. Dance mixes with a constant beat are ideal.

Use music you like. Part of what increases your endurance is the emotional boost that music gives. Try to choose music that you like, or associate with something positive or inspirational. Go to www.fitnessmagazine.com/top100 for Top 100 Songs of 2009. Or www.doipod.com/itunes-chart  for top 100 itunes.  Hair bands from the 80′s always get me going for those long runs.

If you don’t have a MP3 player, think about music in your head. Try children’s songs, Christmas carols or team fight songs.  Can you sing the entire Wonder Pets, Diego and Dragon Tales theme songs?
