People don’t always associate the microwave oven with healthy homemade snacks. Standard fare from the microwave is usually bought pre-made from the store and loaded with preservatives and artificial flavors. This pre-made food is microwaved and eaten by millions every day, although it is hardly the most nutritious option. Here are healthier recipes for two very popular snacks: popcorn and potato chips. We have been talking all year – okay January 2012 – about small lifestyle changes because 2012 is our year to get in gear! Little changes make a big difference in the long run. As opposed to strict denial of everything which is ultimately going to lead to going back to your old ways.

This month is lifestyle changes to your snacks. Here is a list to get you started for some healthy snacking options. Remember you should have snacks 2-3 times per day; a morning snack, afternoon snack and optional evening snack.

This list is filled with sizeable options enjoyable enough to devour guilt-free. And while most of these snacks pack a nutritious punch, a few are clearly set out to satisfy that sweet tooth (see #23!). But hey, at 100 calories or less, it’s worth the splurge. (more…)

Well, almost three weeks into 2012, how are you doing on your “lifestyle changes”? 2012 is the Year to Get in Gear!

We started 2012 with making breakfast healthy and a couple snacks. Are you still on this road with us or do you need to step back reset and begin again.  Based on an incredible insight during a beach run, I was able to develop the new RockIt Mom motivation: There are no failures, only attempts that were not the correct way, so let’s try it again a different way.  Albert Einstein said, “Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” As women, we know — Failure is Not an Option! Let’s try lifestyle changes another way.  Hopefully, these tips will get you started.

1. Kashi Chewy Granola Bars

These are the chewiest bars going (don’t confuse them with other types of Kashi bars — look for “chewy” on the label). They have 130 to 140 calories each, 4 grams of fiber, 5 g of protein, and they’re made with real nuts and whole grains. And they actually taste good. (more…)

Are your kiddos doing lots of camps this summer or just hanging at home?  Surf camp starts tomorrow for one kid and the other is just hanging all summer. It is kind of fun.  We shall see come the end of  July.  Fireworks are coming for Independence Day — aka July 4. Best bets are county fairs, smaller cities, Seaworld, Legoland, Disney anything, and military museums.  Here is a website that will give you local displays based upon your zip code.

It is only 19 days to Christmas and already people are letting their fitness routines, slide away.  This is the most important time to follow through and keep up the fabulous work you have been doing. GUILTY-have had some early eggnog, cookies and cheer but right back into the routine Monday morning.  You have to do keep your fitness up, not only for you, but the rest of your family. You are the POWERHOUSE behind your family.  If they see you slipping, they will most definitely slide, too. Be strong, if you can’t get to your regular gym or class, jump over to the Fitness tab and there are plenty of at home exercises or one of my favorites, turn off Oprah and turn on Exercise or Fit TV.
