Soul Surfer – Bethany Hamiliton

Posted on 27. Mar, 2011 in You Go Girl

Recently, I found a book “Ask Bethany. FAQs: Surfing, Faith & Friends” by Bethany Hamilton with Doris Rikkers.

You may be saying, “Who is Bethany Hamilton, sounds familiar?”  Bethany is the strong, confident and amazing young woman who was attacked by a tiger shark who took her left arm, while she was out surfing in her home of Kauai when she was 13 years old. The story alone shows how strong, focused and powerful she really is.

If you have a young daughter, this is a fabulous book to read TOGETHER.  My 8 years old, who loves to surf, swim and anything water, is amazed at how strong she is and how she is so knowledgeable about so much at a young age. There is a chapter about boys, dating, kissing and all the emotions that go with that.  Bethany has a great response to why she doesn’t have a boyfriend, “A boyfriend is a dangerous thing and could change the course of your life overnight.”  This is from a 16 years old girl.  She needs to mentor those girls on Teen Mom!  Her analogy why you don’t kiss or have a physical relationship with a boy is so on point! I won’t spoil it for you, so you can read the whole chapter.

Bethany is truly a positive and brillant role model for young ladies.  You Go Girl!

Abs, Core, Abs, Core — How many crunches do I HAVE to do?

Posted on 27. Mar, 2011 in Exercises

As women, we hear “work your abs”, “hold that core”, “if you work your core/abs, you will reduce your back pain”. We do the crunches, sit ups, planks, mountain climbers and timed “V” sits.  Are there any other  ab and core exercises?  Well, indeed there are. The (in)famous Jackie Warner has some new core exercises that are compound to work your lower back, abs, obliques, biceps and shoulders.  Click here for the video of  Jackie’s Side Bend Shoulder Press.

How is March treating you? Like a lion or a lamb? March can be a very stressful, mundane and trying month, so take some time break out of your routine and mix things up a bit.  Instead of drinking coffee, try herbal tea or a tea latte.  Tired of the same cardio routine, mix it up with a jump rope, hula-hoop and some head banging rock music.  Work those legs, while doing dishes or checking out at the store, do calf raises.  Instead of plopping down at the computer, stand and Facebook, instead.  This week’s tips are Nice, Green, (more…)
